Programs

In the past few years, the Coppell Police Department engaged residents through multiple community outreach programs. For example, the Police Department hosts a Citizens Police Academy, which gives residents hands-on experience with police operations. The Coppell Police Department also encourages residents to get involved in numerous other programs that it offers, such as:

  • Coffee with Cops
  • Junior Police Academy
  • Police Explorers
  • Women's and High School Girl's Self Defense classes

Further, the Police Department works closely with Homeowners Associations throughout the city, and it offers unique services such as vacation/house watches.

For multiple years, the Coppell Police Department has ranked number one in Texas and in the top 10 in the country for its National Night Out (NNO) efforts. NNO is designed to bring neighbors together, strengthen neighborhood spirit, and generate participation in anti-crime and drug programs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CPD was unable to sponsor NNO in its traditional block party format, but was still able to find ways to engage with our citizens.

Decrease in Crimes

As a result of these programs, the Coppell Police Department has seen a significant decrease of the number of violent crimes in the city. In 2005, Coppell had approximately 24 violent incidents per 1,000 residents. In 2012, that number was decreased to approximately 17 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. In 2017, Coppell had only 13.5 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Overall, crime in Coppell has decreased by 14.5% since 2010.

Technology

It is not just outreach programs that set the Coppell Police Department apart, however. Each Coppell Police Department patrol vehicle is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including thermal imaging night vision cameras, which allow offers to more effectively manage surveillance activities, locate and apprehend suspects, investigate crime scenes and conduct search and rescue operations. Further, the Coppell Police Department implemented the use of body cameras for every officer in 2013.
